Forgive Yourself

Updated: Jan 3, 2021

How many times you find yourself in a vicious cycle. You get motivated to lose weight or get into the gym; it may look like this.

Monday lets go, starting this week out right! Tuesday, day two and still feeling good. All arrows point to getting things done. Wednesday (hump day), whew tired and maybe hangry. Thursday ok well I work out 3 days already and a rest day is well deserved, and so is this pint of ice cream. Friday after work happy hour, I need these drinks. My week has been hectic, I can't go to the gym and miss happy-hour, I'll go tomorrow. Saturday gym class and mimosas/ drinks with the crew and maybe some French toast. Sunday is a rest day (you know why), but I have to get ready for work, do my chores and meal prepping. I will have Chinese food so I don't have to cook today.

Now that week is gone and you fell off the wagon. You are trying to fit into your clothes and they don't fit. You curse the tacos, fries, burgers, and all the chips you had last week. You filter every picture so you don't have to see the person that you become and don't recognize. This then leads you into a time of sadness, guilt or worse yet depression. It sets off cortisol levels, which produce more of what we call the ” fat hormone”.

How can you forgive yourself and get back to doing the things that can change those missteps?

"Forgiveness is a process. Not to be rushed and steps should not be skipped.”

  • Don't beat yourself up

  • Use time management apps

  • Substitute drinks for lite options

  • Eat off the healthy menu

  • Use apps or food journal to track your meals

  • Use apps or daily mood trackers

  • Drink water

  • Celebrate nonscale victories

  • Reduce your stress, sleep more

Acknowledging your feelings can be a great way to stay in tune with what is wrong. Taking notes to try to avoid them gives you a sense of control. Doing things that make you happy and don't derail your day, can distract you or take you out of the funk. For example, listening to my favorite playlist and doing chores or taking a nap always works for me! Most of all forgive yourself Rome wasn't built in a day!
